CAN EQ BE LEARNED?

Unlike one’s level of IQ, which changes very little from childhood, emotional intelligence includes skills that can be learned at any age. Research agrees that people can be taught to better manage emotions.

The first step to enhancing emotional intelligence is self-awareness. The Emotional Intelligence Assessment contributes by increasing awareness of one's traits, strengths, and weaknesses. Our assessment is unique in that the feedback report outlines the `next steps' and `what you can do now that you know this.'

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

Emotional intelligence is about one's ability to recognize, process, and utilize emotionally loaded information. Emotional intelligence has been studied since the 1920's. Salovey and Mayer, in 1990, described EQ as "a form of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one's thinking and actions."

Daniel Goleman became interested in Salovey and Mayer's work, which subsequently led to his best seller Emotional Intelligence. In his book, Goleman categorized five components of EQ; self-awareness, self-regulation, and motivation are part of intrapersonal intelligence, while empathy and social skills are a part of interpersonal intelligence.

ASSESSMENT SCALES

The Emotional Intelligence Assessment provides an overall EQ score, an Intrapersonal Intelligence score, an Interpersonal Intelligence score, and scores on the five components of EQ. Respondents rate each item using a scale with the options; "Very Inaccurate, Somewhat Inaccurate, Neither Accurate nor Inaccurate; Somewhat Accurate, and Very Accurate." There are 9 reverse-scored items on the Emotional Intelligence Assessment.

THE ULTIMATE GOAL

The ultimate goal of any learning is to make better decisions. EQ is positioned physiologically at the base of all decision-making, skills and actions. It is the foundational competency that drives our actions, our knowledge, skills, abilities, our performance in our role and ultimately, the effectiveness of our decision-making.

THE VALUE OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

The value of EQ can be illustrated by the following example. Each day we experience approximately 20,000 moments. A moment is defined as a few seconds during which our brain records an experience. The quality of our days, and the quality of our interactions with others, is determined by how our brains recognize and categorize our moments as positive, negative, or neutral. Rarely do we remember neutral moments. But positive and negative moments have an effect on us.

According to research, the magic ratio of positive-to-negative moments is 5:1. This means that five positive experiences are needed to mitigate one negative experience. It is worth noting that this ratio has been found to predict, with nearly l00% accuracy, everything from workplace performance to divorce. Those with higher EQ have more of an ability to recognize that this 5:1 ratio exists and exerts a strong influence on relationships with others.

Research at Gallup has shown that only 25% of employees are fully engaged in their work. The cost of disengagement has been estimated to be so pervasive that it costs an organization, on average $5,000 per employee, conservatively. Research on turnover shows that attrition - and its predecessor, disengagement - are caused by negative interpersonal actions.

The leaders at an organization set the tone and culture for interpersonal interaction. The leader's EQ affects their team's emotions and actions. Such emotional contamination travels down the chain in an organization, ultimately affecting your customer's emotions and buying behaviors to affect your bottom line.
