Company description

Comtek Advanced Structures (Comtek) is an industry leader in the
repair, engineering and manufacturing of structural and interior
aircraft components made from advanced composite materials,
primarily for the regional airline and corporate jet markets.
From its headquarters in Burlington, Ontario, Comtek supports
airlines and other aircraft operators with durable repairs and
engineered products that reduce life cycle costs. For aircraft
manufacturers and their major system suppliers, Comtek provides
comprehensive design, manufacturing and support services for
composite parts and assemblies.

The use of advanced composites on new aircraft designs is
rapidly increasing due to their light weight, reduced part
count, good fatigue properties and resistance to corrosion. As
an advanced technology company, Comtek provides both aircraft
operators and manufacturers with cost-effective services that
emphasize creativity, responsiveness and flexibility in meeting
the needs of dynamic markets.

In the year 2000 alone, Comtek:

· Doubled the size of its Burlington facility to 35,000
sq. ft. (3,250 sq. m.)
· Doubled its work force to more than 100 employees
· Increased sales by 75% over the previous year and was
ranked #64 on the Profit Magazine list of the 100 fastest-
growing companies in Canada, with 1507% sales growth during its
first five years in business
· Was awarded “Engineering Project of the Year” by the
Hamilton Engineering Institute and the Hamilton Chapter of
Professional Engineers Ontario, for the design, development and
production of a flight test engine nacelle for Honeywell Engines
& Systems of Phoenix, Arizona

Sales are projected to grow another 60% in 2001. For the second
year in a row, Comtek was listed by Profit Magazine as one of
Canada's 100 fastest-growing companies. Comtek is a strong
exporter, with 60% of sales outside of Canada.

To sustain its competitive position, Comtek forges strategic
alliances with government, industry and academic organizations
to conduct applied research and development in new products and
processes. To build the highly skilled workforce needed to
achieve the company’s aggressive growth targets, Comtek has
pioneered an innovative apprenticeship for its technical staff
and established its own in-house training program.

Technology profile

As an advanced technology company, Comtek has an active
technology development program that supports the company’s
strategic need for new products and processes and for the
evaluation of newly-developed material systems that can be used
in new products. This will require continued technology
innovation and ongoing partnerships with customers, universities
and government research and development centres, so that the
company maintains its competitive advantage.

Comtek’s Technology Development Committee, which is chaired by
the Vice President, periodically evaluates and prioritizes all
company development activities. Some of these activities are
done in-house, but many are collaborative programs with other
companies such as Bombardier, academic institutions such as
Carleton University, and government research organizations such
as the Canadian National Research Council.

Activities are focussed on products and processes for
application in the relatively short term. Comtek monitors
state-of-the-art research conducted around the world through
timely review of the relevant technical and scientific
publications and by attending technical conferences.
