OdoFlux™: Sampling chamber for odours & volatile chemicals from surface sources

The ODOFLUX™ sampling device is used to measure emission flow rates
from various diffusing surfaces (water, soil, waste), which are usually
difficult to characterize by traditional means:

Contaminated soils
Spreading fields
Retention, aeration and water treatment pools
Compost windrows
Volatile organic compounds
Greenhouse gases
Hydrogen sulphide

A surface source is defined as a source of diffuse emissions over a
certain area. Landfills, contaminated sites, compost and manure,
waste water treatment pools, spreading fields and others are
examples of such sources.
Gas or odour sampling from surface sources is carried out using
TEDLAR© or NALOPHANE© bags or chemically inert containers. All
piping, surfaces and connections in contact with sampled gas are
TEFLON©, NALOPHANE©, TEDLAR©, stainless steel, glass or acrylic
Sampling is done using OdoFlux(TM), a specific sampling chamber
for odours and volatile chemicals from surface sources
manufactured by Odotech Inc following an US EPA design. The
process developed by the US EPA allows gas and odour sampling
without out any contact between the sampled gas or odour and
internal mechanism (pump, etc).
The flux chamber consists of a cylindrical enclosure with a
spherical top. The flux chamber is supplied with a controlled flow
of ultra pure air from a cylinder (see figure on reverse side). The
pure air can also be generated in the field by a filtration system
and a compressor. The bag introduced in the lung chamber is
connected by a TEFLON© tube to the outlet of the flux chamber.
The air is aspirated from the lung chamber using a pump at a
controlled flow rate. Due to negative relative pressure, the bag is
then filled with gas from the flux chamber.
Odoflux allows precise flux measurement in g/m3s or in o.u. /m3s.

The odour concentration is measured manually at the sources of the site.
That measured value is then used as a fixed input to the OdoScan™ software,
which uses the real-time weather data from the met tower to model the atmospheric dispersion
and display the site’s odour plume.
Continuous tracking of odour impact
OdoScan™ is a big step forward in dealing with the odour emissions of an industrial site. Affordable, easy to implement and reliable, it is an indispensable tool for the site operator.
OdoScan™ thus tracks the direction of the emitted odour based on fixed source concentration data (in
odour units per cubic metre) but real-time weather.
The standards used for the measurements are ASTM E-679-91 and European Standard EN 13725.

The e-noses are positioned near the odour sources of the site and measure the odour continuously. The odor data from the e-noses and the weather data from the weather tower are sent to the OdoWatch® software, which models the atmospheric dispersion and displays the site’s odour plume.
OdoWatch® is calibrated to recognize and quantify (in odour units) the odours of each site.
The standards used for the measurements are ASTM E-679-91 and European Standard EN 13725.
