Genomics Digital Lab
Genomics Digital Lab is an integrated series of interactive games, animations and case-studies that connects several areas of biology in a topical and relevant way. It’s built around the story of energy, how plans use it, and the flow of that energy from the plant to the cell. Designed around a discovery-based and inquiry-based approach, users have to figure out how to make a dying plant survive, interact with the major cellular organelle, “play” the biochemical systems that run the cell and discover the connections to our food, fuel, and the amazing abilities of plants. With integrated formative and summative assessment tools and class management tools, Genomics Digital Lab provides meaningful assessment, and is designed to captivate and engage learners, from high-school grades 7 to 12, through an integrated understanding of biological processes, while promoting higher-order thinking skills in a fun and entertaining format.
But why should you care about plants? Plants are the foundation for life on earth. The air we breath, the food we eat, and the gas in our cars - all come from plants!
Your mission is to save our dying plant!
Inside the lab you will be able to alter the environment (air, light & soil), and venture within the three main organelles to figure out the best conditions needed for our plant to survive and thrive.
GDL: Plant Cells is an amazing tool to help begin talking about plants and why they are so important to us. It is an interactive laboratory that allows students to alter the environment around a plant, zoom in and out of the major plant cell organelles, and use what they learn to figure out how to make the dying plant survive and thrive. The software is divided into three modules allowing you to learn from the perspective of the mitochondria, chloroplast or nucleus, while at the same time, reinforcing the "Genomic" concept that organelles are linked and dependant on each other. GDL plant cells is great for everyone, but the accompanying teaching assets are geared for students grades 7 to 12.
