www.diagnosingskindiseases.ca – Diagnosing Skin Diseases, a diagnostic tool and educational resource for pediatricians and primary caregivers. Diagnosing Skin Diseases (DSD) is a browser-based multimedia program designed for pediatricians, family physicians, nurses and medical students. A prospective survey by two dermatologists documenting 260 patients, referred to them by primary care givers, found 319 errors in diagnosis and treatment. 88% of these errors were in diagnosis. Because diagnosis is the most difficult aspect for non-dermatologists, DSD includes diagnostic trees. These decision trees will help both students and primary caregivers develop a careful and logical approach to diagnosis of skin diseases. Answering the questions in a diagnostic tree will lead to a probable diagnosis and an article on the disease. Diagnosis is also made easier by instant access to multiple images, which clearly illustrate the primary lesions and clinical presentations of the common skin diseases. Only the diseases that a primary caregiver could be expected to treat are included. Treatments are discussed clearly and succinctly and can be accessed quickly. Definitions and short descriptions of rarer diseases are provided to help the primary caregiver know when to refer patients. DSD also includes a self-study section with several case studies, test cases and many multiple choice questions. Instant feedback is provided to enhance learning.

www.rale.ca - R.A.L.E. Lung Sounds software is a multimedia textbook designed to teach students and practitioners how to recognize normal and abnormal lung sounds. More that 50 high fidelity recordings from children and adults demonstrate wheezes, crackles, stridor and other respiratory sounds. The lung sounds are beautifully presented with sonograms that illustrate the sound intensity and frequency using color. In addition a parallel flow graph and respiration bar allow the listener to note the corresponding inspiratory and expiratory breathing cycle. Case studies include asthma, bronchiolitis, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, croup, fibrosing alveolitis and other pulmonary diseases. An additional set of two dozen randomly selected quiz cases allows self assessment. The user of this program will gain excellent sound recognition skills and learn the proper use of appropriate terminology to describe lung sounds. Excellent for teaching bedside patient assessment skills. The program uses any Windows compatible sound card. Headphones or Hi-Fi audio speakers are recommended.
