The Company is the leading worldwide supplier of chlorine dioxide technology and precursor chemicals to the pulp and paper and water treatment markets. The Company is the second largest worldwide producer of sodium chlorate with six plants located in North America and a seventh plant announced for construction in New South Wales, Australia.The company is the largest worldwide producer of sodium chlorite with two North American plants.The company's Saskatoon, Saskatchewan plant is also a strong regional supplier of chloralkali products in western Canada and also produces calcium hypochlorite for the North American market. The worldwide growth of sodium chlorate has been driven by the need to reduce/eliminate potential formation of dioxins and furans in the pulp bleaching process. The pulp and paper industry's need to adopt ECF technology, based on chlorine dioxide replacing chlorine in the pulp bleaching process, has resulted in significant growth in demand for sodium chlorate in North America and worldwide. The adoption of chlorine dioxide as an environmentally preferable municipal drinking water disinfection technology is expected to similiarly result in strong growth in demand for sodium chlorite.
