Lockheed Martin MS 2 Training Partner- F16 Simulator IntegrationWhen Lockheed Martin sells technology such as aircrafts to its customers, it also provides training systems for both pilots and maintenance personnel. The training system must handle student and instructor registration, training records and certifications with scheduling for students and resources.
Not only does the system need to schedule classrooms, it must schedule training on simulators, aircraft and other equipment, such as aircraft engines. Because of the nature of this training, it is vital that the results be carefully and thoroughly tracked — including the complex records from simulators.
For its military customers, Lockheed Martin has developed simulators for the F-16 aircraft.
The mission training can be done singly or using groups of simulators, and student registration consists of a combination of data, rights and passwords that determines which simulator is required and what a particular student is permitted to do during training. Once training has begun, the simulator records each 'event' that occurs with times, scores and instructor comments.
When MS2 went looking for a learning management system (LMS) that could handle specific military training and work with its F-16 simulators, it had a list of over 300 requirements. After evaluating a number of systems, MS2 chose the Training Partner LMS from GeoMetrix Data Systems Inc. While no LMS could provide off-the-shelf the functionality specifically required by MS2 for this project, Training Partner offered the capability to tailor every screen with custom fields, dialogs and functions. Training Partner is also designed to let system administrators perform most customizations themselves.
MS2 added custom fields throughout the application to deal with its complex scheduling and registration needs, and tailored Training Partner for air tasking orders, which contain the data that pilots use to plan their missions.
GeoMetrix consulting helped refine the system by creating an import/export capability between Training Partner and the simulators. Registration and mission data is sent to the simulator and the results of simulator training are sent back to Training Partner.
As a result of all these changes, Lockheed Martin was able to use its simulators as they were designed and then tailor Training Partner to work around them. Now, when Lockheed Martin sells F-16 aircraft, it not only provides the simulators to its customers, but can also provide an integrated learning management system that manages classroom and equipment resources, shares data with simulators, secures sensitive information and provides full reporting and data analysis.
And MS2 continues to modify screens and dialogs as needs change. Bowles observes that if a simulator needs modifications after it is up and running, it can be very expensive. But making changes to Training Partner can be done easily

BioinformaticsWhen legislative amendments added information dissemination to the mandate of a national healthcare agency, it created an informatics network. The term informatics is defined as the sciences concerned with gathering, manipulating, storing, retrieving and classifying recorded information. Informatics as a discipline is considered to be the practice of information processing and the engineering of information systems.
For the agency's needs, informatics was a way to manage, process and disseminate data, information and knowledge related to diseases and healthcare. Often referred to as medical informatics or bioinformatics, ultimately, the goal is to improve patient outcomes.
Medical informatics or health informatics is the intersection of information science, computer science and health care. The agency's informatics network was designed to enable all members of its community to share data and knowledge — from researchers and physicians to patients and their families. The hope was for the network to be a truly collaborative system that would promote new approaches to disease detection, treatment and prevention.
The informatics network is managed by the agency's information technology department, which has a budget in the tens of millions and has more than 50 employees and dozens of contractors.
The informatics system's software and resources are widely distributed, interlinked, and available to everyone in the community that the agency supports. The network's Learning Management System is the central resource for browsing learning options, registering for training, tracking progress and requesting new courses.
Originally, training for the IT department and the network was tracked in several spreadsheets, and registration for classes was done through email or telephone by each instructor. A training administrator for the agency noted that the process was disjointed and required many hours of work from the instructors. The agency needed a system to automate the registration process and track all training for the IT department and the informatics network.
To accomplish this, the IT department needed a Learning Management System (LMS) and began research into the marketplace in 2004. The agency's criteria for an LMS included the ability to:
* Manage classroom, online and self-study trainings;
* Track registrations, attendance and quiz/exam/evaluation results;
* Minimize the amount of time students spend searching for training by providing a one-stop shop for training;
* Provide an easily accessible, user-friendly interface for students to create their own accounts in order to register for classes and track their progress;
* Allow instructors to manage their classes with access to enrollment reports, sign in sheets and attendance logs; and
* Provide in-depth reports on all aspects of training.
In 2005, the agency choose the TrainingPartner LMS from GeoMetrix Data Systems Inc. and began the purchase process. TrainingPartner met the criteria set forth for a robust, yet user-friendly, Learning Management System. Agency personnel also noted that TrainingPartner was scalable based on their initial needs and what they could foresee using it for in the future.
Implementation of the LMS involved importing data from the spreadsheets into TrainingPartner, configuring the system and performing minor customizations. GeoMetrix provided training and consulting services along the way. Agency IT personnel maintain that GeoMetrix staff has been helpful and supportive in all areas.
The agency uses TrainingPartner to track all IT and network-related training. When they began using TrainingPartner, they had mostly instructor-led courses for which they were able to streamline registration, attendance tracking and quiz and evaluation marking. Over the past three years, their focus has shifted to self-paced courses that students can complete at their own pace. The department now has around 30% live courses and 70% self-paced courses which personnel are able to manage all aspects of with TrainingPartner. They are also able to promote roles based on a student’s area of interest and recommend courses that would benefit them.
Agency staff declare that the IT department's favorite TrainingPartner features are the user-friendly web interface and the extensive reports available. The web interface is user-friendly from the student’s side and relatively easy to manipulate on the administrator’s side.
From an administrator’s point of view, agency personnel note that the reports are the best feature. They are able to create reports from a high-level overview to a detailed report on almost any aspect of the system. Staff state that the ability to have very specific information available at their fingertips without building queries from scratch has been invaluable.
TrainingPartner has helped streamline the search and registration process for students and allowed instructors to enter attendance online and review quiz and evaluation results quickly and easily.
The time and energy administrators and instructors have spent on tracking training has been the largest ROI.
