Sector Information

Unique Applications:

Case Study: Banner Thunderbird Medical Center

The context:

Recognized as one of the leading health care providers in the state of Arizona, Banner Thunderbird Medical Center decided to build a new facility in Glendale. The new additional capacity was designed to allow the medical center to pursue growth opportunities and maintain its leading position in the region.

The challenge:

The new Bed Tower and Expansion project was commissioned to the NTD Architects while the glazing operations were passed on to Walters & Wolf Construction Specialties. The new patient and exam rooms as well as the new operating rooms needed to be fitted to meet the high standards of hygiene, indoor air quality and privacy control that are required in healthcare facilities. Vision Control® insulated glass with integral louvers was chosen in order to minimize maintenance of the observation equipment and to create a germ-free environment.

Unicel’s solution:

For Unicel, it was the first time in Arizona that the company got involved in a project of such amplitude, being required to manufacture over 300 Vision Control® units.
The tenant improvements to the new building required half of the Vision Control® units to be installed in borrowed lites and the other half in doors, using Unicel’s trim kits. The units were manufactured with white blades and fan-shaped thumbwheel operators (the new white aluminum type) to accommodate the healthcare environment.

In 2007, Unicel manufactured another batch of Vision Control® units for the Children’s Hospital of the Banner Desert Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ, a member of the same health care system. This medical center will incorporate yet another batch to be delivered in 2009.

Key parameters:

Location: Glendale, AZ
Gross square footage: 470,000 square feet
Completion: 2010
Program: expansion, new patient tower, expanded emergency department

Success Stories:

Case Studies: Louvers: North Carolina Museum of Art
http://www.unicelarchitectural.com/en/louvers-case-studies-north-carolina-museum.php

The context:

NCMA, the first American art museum collection to be formed by state legislation and appropriation began a challenging expansion project right on the brink of its 60th anniversary. Following this initiative, the new construction was set to occupy 127,000 square feet, enough space to host the permanent collection of over 5,000 art objects. Also, the expansion transformed the existing building into a temporary exhibition center, administrative and educational offices, along with gardens and outdoor galleries, all conceived to create the nation’s largest art museum park.

The challenge:

Inspired by the artistic and educational goals of the project and stirred by the marvelous exterior scenery, the architect sought assistance to create a vaulted roof that would match the neighboring hills, while allowing controlled daylight into the buildings. In order to enhance visitors’ experience with art and help preserve the masterpieces hosted by the museum, the architect needed a system to filter UV rays and allow only a controlled amount of light to seep in.

Based on a successful work relationship developed in time, Thomas Phifer & Partners appointed Unicel Architectural to provide a custom-made sunscreen. The ultimate goal was to turn light into art with the help of technology.

Unicel’s solution:

For the NCMA sunscreen, Unicel developed a specially-designed blade to effectively control the amount of daylight that reaches inside the building. The blades were conceived to filter the UV radiations that could damage the exhibits and to allow only a reduced quantity of light to penetrate. Once it passes the sunshades, a system of vaulted ceiling coffers filters and softly diffuses the light at the galleries.

The sunscreen comprises 376 curved panels of 20' x 6' made of clear anodized aluminum.

Because of the number of panels, their shape and the daylight efficiency challenge, the NCMA sunshade was a very complex project in terms of design and manufacturing.

Key parameters:

Location: Raleigh, NC
Gross square footage: 127,000 square feet (11,798 m2)
Sunscreen: 45,000 square feet (4180 m2)
Completion: 2009
Program: Expansion, galleries, courtyards, public spaces

Team:
Owner: North Carolina Museum of Art
Architect: Thomas Phifer & Partners, NYC
