Biotechnology Focus Groups Food Applications

This report attempts to understand consumer perceptions and attitudes to available information on biotechnology. The researchers first interviewed stakeholders to determine the information made available to consumers, and then met with consumers in focus groups across the country to determine what information consumers had access to; explore what perceptions and attitudes consumers expressed about available biotechnology information; and examine and evaluate stakeholder publications. Among the report's findings are: 1) consumer acceptance of information is based on the degree of trust a consumer has in the source, 2) many of the participants expressed concern about the long-term effects of biotechnology, and 3) most of the participants indicated that information presented in a frequently-asked-questions format was easier to read, and answered most of their questions on biotechnology.
