This Report is a response to a request to the Royal Society of Canada from Health Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Environment Canada that an Expert Panel be assembled to provide advice on a series of questions related to the safety of new food products being developed through the use of new genetic engineering technologies. The Terms of Reference asked the Panel "to provide Health Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Environment Canada with advice on our regulatory system and the scientific capacity that the federal government requires into the 21st century to ensure the safety of new food products being developed through biotechnology".
