I think Canada could show great leadership in the global/digital world by being fair to those people who create the materials that are used digitally. Writers/artists/performers are frequently asked to give of their time and talents to benefit others, and yet we (J.K. Rowling excluded) are among the lowest paid members of society. I'm sure for my two YA books, one of which was a finalist for the Governor General's award, I am well below minimum wage in returns. The idea that that work can be copied with no recompense to me is absolutely breath-taking. I would like to see the Canadian government on the side of the artists, not on the side of big or little business.
