Dear Ministers,
As a consumer of digital media and electronics I stand to be greatly impacted by changes to the Canadian copyright regime. I am worried that this Government may wrongly adopt the American approach to digital copyright law as evidenced by prior draft bills including Bill C-61.
With the digital age transforming so many views in ways that we can\'t even begin to grasp at this moment in time, I believe that our laws should have the flexibility to act in a way that doesn\'t harm the individual. The individual who is not a criminal should have nothing to fear from using the internet. Criminals who desire nothing more than to get rich off other peoples work are the ones who should be targeted.
As it is, even speaking out to add my voice to the many across Canada I feel fear. I fear that these laws could be a turning point in making the freedom of information act a joke. How can we feel free to use information we find online when you hear stories of people being fined outrageous amounts of money? My husband wants us to get rid of our internet. He is terrified that my son or myself may surf the wrong site and wind up on a list somewhere that will burden our family with unwanted and unneeded legal and monetary problems. The feeling of living in a police state where everything you say or do online could ruin your life is becoming more and more common with a lot of people I know.
Respectfully,
Shauna Murphy
