I am an Information Security Specialist concerned with the implications of a misguided Copyright legislation. The ethical issues with blindly following U.S. lead are a significant source of my concern. Our southern neighbors have historically shown their government is lead by profit-hungry corporations, with no regard for the well-being of the population they are supposed to serve. I do not want to see this happen in Canada, although I sadly realize that it is happening more and more every day.
I urge you to consider whether you want to allow large, unscrupulous corporations dictate what everyone in this country can and cannot do with their technology and art. People should have the right to control their own technology. Technology intended for legitimate purposes should not be blamed for its possible misuse. Students should be able to use copyrighted material for educational purposes without having to pay royalties. Internet use should not be monitored or interrupted by mere unfounded suspicions of infringement, impacting the privacy of millions to protect the interests of a few. Finally, penalties for copyright violations should be commensurate with the crime. We don't want to have a case like the U.S. where an ordinary citizen can be bankrupt for downloading 20 songs.
In short, I urge you to make the voice of the people heard and work towards a fair copyright legislation inspired by human values, and not corporate profits.
