I am a Canadian author of children's books. I work very hard at my craft, even though I work at two other jobs to support my writing. I give readings and presentations to encourage Canadian children to read and to write and to love literature. I am grateful for all the government support, especially PLR, given to Canada's writers, and hope that support continues. The arts give light, colour and texture to our lives. Canada is a cultural fabric made up of many colours and textures, and in order to share those with one another it is important for our leaders to encourage writers and other artists. Without imagination our lives would be shades of gray.
The publishing industry is suffering. I have actually been told by one publisher that they want very much to publish a story of mine — a story they love — but they are hesitating because of the current financial climate.
Writing is not simply what I do, but who I am. Please make sure that I, and my fellow writers, can continue to share our vision with the rest of Canada, and that we are fairly compensated for the work we do. The only way to accomplish this is with strong legislation that covers web publishing and reproduction and protects writers and illustrators.
Many Thanks,
Joan Betty Stuchner
