Dear Ministers,
I am greatly opposed to Canada\'s attempt at mimicking the United States\' DMCA. There are countless stories of poor familes being hunted down by the RIAA and being prosecuted to the tune of $10,000 per song violation.
I suggest all of you talk to some heavy media consuers such as myself to get the facts straight. Yes, I download a lot of music. Yes, I download a lot of movies. At the same time, my CD and DVD collection DWARFS that of every single one of my friends. I am a huge media consumer… period.
The only real options that people have for purchasing legal mp3s is online stores such as iTunes that give pennies per song to the artist while most of it goes to overhead and bandwidth and Steve Jobs. Any mp3 downloaded from his store must be played on his hardware. It is a complete monopoly. I am not willing to surrender my rights to consume art in order to satisfy his salary and the pockets of all his investors.
This law is completely against my personal freedoms and is essentially a way for the music companies to maintain their stranglehold on the way we buy music. They were late to the game and now they want government protection against illegal downloads while they provide no legal opportunity for downloads at a fair DRM free price.
Sincerely,
Arley Drew
