I really hope that any new laws pertaining to copyright respect the fact that Canada has to compete globally in a knowledge based economy and if we make patchwork laws to protect outdated business models we are potentially stifling our ability to innovate.

Also as a researcher I hope that access to others works and ability to comment and reproduce parts of other peoples research are not hindered. Again restrictions in this area only serve to hurt our research community and Canada's ability to compete globally.

I want to see laws that are forward looking, respect what Canadians want and need, not laws just to protect 'old media', laws that don't restrict particular technologies just because they might be used to bypass copyright, and laws that look at examples from other countries and really examine what has been successful and what hasn't.

We need real leadership in this area.
