i have many issues with the current thinking on copyright reform here in canada but this one peeves me the most:
taken from an article i just read online: http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/News/CanadaWorld/2009/07/30/10318306-sun.html
"A day earlier, Quebecor, which owns Sun Media, was one of 20 invited participants at a meeting with Moore in Gatineau.
"We need an updating of the copyright law as soon as possible to make it clear that file sharing is illegal and to protect intellectual property, otherwise, business will go elsewhere," said Serge Sasseville, Quebecor Media’s vice-president of corporate and institutional affairs. althia.raj@sunmedia.ca"
file sharing is not illegal, the sharing of copyrighted works is illegal, and is already covered under law? where is the need to update the law... ? and i'd like to state again, file-sharing is used for purposes other that pirating copyrighted works, there are many examples of this of which i'm sure you've heard them all
that and the use of DRM/TPM ... being able to break locks is essential and must be kept legal, why? look at Amazon and its deletion of its books from folks devices, thats a TPM and takes full advantage of a consumer, Amazon themselves even admitted their huge mistake and how they will learn from it and that they shouldn't of gone about what happened in that manner. as well the RIAA recently stated that we as consumers aren't entitled to digital products we buy 'forever' and they must expire, does anyone actually believe thats right? i can't hold onto a product, music, movie, book etc forever? cant pass that digital download onto our kids or give that download to a friend.... think of the extra unfair profit these companies are making on the backs of people.
thanks for your time
cheers!
