The above is an example of how a large organization bullies individuals. In this case, the AP (Associated Press) claims "copyright" over words in the historical record from a letter by Thomas Jefferson.

A little guy can't afford the lawyers to defend their right to a common cultural heritage, specifically the right to cite words by a long dead historical figure. This is an uneven fight.

The copyright laws need to be re-written to assume a prima facie right by individuals to access to, use of, and alteration of "copyright" material. Access should be free. The onus should be on the owner of the copyright to show mis-use for commercial purposes by the individual and there should be severe penalties for any attempted litigation by a copyright holder for a case found to be without merit in order to prevent bullying by the well-funded corporations over the rights of individuals.
