Canada's software industry is an important part of our economy and the future of our country.

As a software developer, part of my job is to figure out how to make new, innovative software coexist with existing software. The interfaces and protocols for doing so are often unavailable or undocumented. An important part of getting the new software to work is to reverse engineer the existing software to understand how it works.

The process does not alter the existing software or "pirate" it in any way.

I am concerned that a new copyright bill might include provisions against such research (sometimes called anti circumvention), which would hamper the ability to create innovative new software or hardware. It would be best for the future of Canada is such activity would be encouraged rather than restricted.
