And there are over 1 BILLION computers in the world. Just throwing numbers around is a fruitless exercise.
So lets flip the card over, where are the legitimate download sites? What are their download rates? You have certainly identified a demand, a commercial opportunity, so where is the service to fill it?
These sites came into existence to fill a void. Technology and the worldwide market have advanced. Once you have legitimate download sites that offer the same products in a timely fashion, you can start to compare numbers and produce valid estimates on how much this "piracy" costs the industry. An unauthorized download does NOT always equate to a lost DVD sale.
If you want to throw numbers around to justify a "loss", you MUST supply the source and the methodology you used. Compare apples to apples. All you have done with the above numbers is identify a potential market demand. A worldwide demand. Good enough for a new market analysis study, but useless in determining a market loss.

I agree that the numbers indicate a market demand.
Commentaire
A simple change to create competition would be to delete from the Copyright Act the monopoly it creates for book distributors (s. 27.1). Exclusive distributors are not authors, licensees or copyright owners. This would increase competition, lower book prices, and make books more readily available throughout Canada.
