Goal 6: Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions and Energy
Goal 6: Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions and Energy - Target 6.1: GHG Emissions Reduction

Target 6.1: GHG Emissions Reduction

The Government of Canada will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its buildings and fleets by 17% below 2005 levels by 2020.

Departmental Target

Departmental target: 17% below 2005 by 2020

Scope and Context
  • Source of targeted GHG emissions: fleet only (on-road vehicles).
  • To match the government-wide GHG reduction target of 17 percent by 2020–21, the Department's GHG fleet emissions targets were calculated using a linear model (a yearly reduction of total GHG emissions by 0.0216 kilotonnes of CO2 equivalent).
  • Industry Canada's GHG emissions reduction strategy takes technology advancements into account and capitalizes on the use of Public Works and Government Services Canada's green standing offers for vehicle purchases and internal communiqués for sharing information about the various tools to improve fleet efficiency and reduce emissions (e.g., anti-idling campaign).
