Harper Government Strengthens Canada's Aerospace Sector

Saint–Laurent, Quebec, October 25, 2010 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, today announced a repayable investment of $ 8.6 million in a $61.9 million research and development project being undertaken by Mechtronix Systems Inc. This investment is being made through the Strategic Aerospace and Defence Initiative (SADI). From pilot training courseware to full–blown immersive flight simulators, Mechtronix's family of products makes use of the latest digital technologies. The company is an important user of information and communications technologies and promotes their use and adoption by airlines and flight training schools.

Government promotes innovation as a key driver of Canada's economic recovery

October 14, 2010 — Today, the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology) in Toronto and the Honourable Jean–Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veteran Affairs and Minister of State Agriculture (Quebec) in Saguenay launched an independent expert panel to solicit the advice of Canadians and business leaders on how the federal government can cultivate its support of business research and development.

Government of Canada launches Canada's Cyber Security Strategy

On October 3, the Honourable Vic Toews, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Natural Resources, launched a strategy that will enhance protection from cyber threats for Canadian governments, industries and families from coast to coast to coast. Canada's Cyber Security Strategy delivers on the Government's 2010 Speech from the Throne commitment to boost Canada's cyberspace against the growing threat of cyber crimes.
"The Strategy complements the efforts of the digital economy strategy in Canada and builds upon legislation introduced by the Government, such as anti–spam legislation set out in the Fighting Internet and Wireless Spam Act and amendments to the Criminal Code to create new offences related to obtaining, possessing and trafficking in identity documents or identity information", said the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry.

New funding to promote ICT workers' foreign credentials

The Government of Canada is funding a project that will make it easier for internationally trained information and communications technology (ICT) professionals to find work in their field. The Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) will receive over $2.4 million in Foreign Credential Recognition Program funding for its IMPACTS Initiative.

New "virtual brain surgery" training centre opens in Montreal

The operating room is going increasingly high–tech and making use of information and communications technologies. The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology, was at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (The Neuro) of McGill University on Wednesday, September 15, to open one of seven new virtual reality neurosurgery training centres that will be set up across the country.

Submissions on Foreign Investment in the Telecommunications Industry now Online

OTTAWA, August 9, 2010 — Submissions made as part of Industry Canada's public consultation on foreign investment restrictions in the telecommunications sector are now online at Spectrum Mananagement and Telecommunications. The consultations were announced by the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, on June 11, and ran until July 30, 2010. The consultation paper is also posted on the site. It outlines the current restrictions, describes how Canada compares with other countries and presents the following three options for consideration:
- Increase the limit for direct foreign investment in broadcasting and telecommunications common carriers to 49%;
- Lift restrictions on telecommunications common carriers with a 10% market share or less, by revenue; or
- Remove telecommunications restrictions completely.
Reviewing restrictions on foreign investment is consistent with the government's approach to relying more on market forces and less on regulation in the telecommunications industry. Telecommunications is a critical part of the digital economy — a key government priority.
Privacy Commissioner's consumer privacy consultation event to focus on cloud computing

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) is hosting a consultation with Canadians on the topic of cloud computing and its impact on the privacy of consumers. The consultation, the third in a series, will take place on June 21, 2010 in Calgary. Journalists are welcome to attend. The event will also be broadcast live on the Web, and media and the public will be able to submit questions via e–mail and Twitter.

Minister references consultation, competition in Summit keynote

TORONTO, Ontario, June 8, 2010 — Yesterday, June 7, Minister Clement opened the 2010 Canadian Telecom Summit with a keynote speech that addressed two main themes in the digital economy strategy consultation process: the adoption of digital technology and the future of digital networks. He also announced that the government will consult Canadians this summer on the issue of foreign direct investment in the telecommunications sector.

SSHRC offers funds for study of digital economy

MONTREAL, Quebec, June 7, 2010 — The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) today announced a Presidential Fund Initiative aimed at engaging academics in research on the digital economy. The new initiative offers a funding opportunity up to $25 000 for researchers who provide analysis of the current state of knowledge about the digital economy and identify knowledge gaps in one or more of the five discussion themes in the digital economy strategy consultation paper.

MaRS connects to Canadian Digital Media Network

The MaRS Discovery District in downtown Toronto is the latest node to be added to the Canadian Digital Media Network (CDMN), the two organizations announced on May 20. The CDMN is the organizer of the Canada 3.0 2010 digital media forum, which featured the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, as opening keynote speaker earlier this month.
