With ever more digital equipment the problem of e–waste is becoming a serious problem. We can not morally externalize the cost. E–waste recycling needs to be more convenient and incentives need to be created for companies to produce less waste. If every electronic store was mandated to take back e–waste and return it to the manufacturer for disassembly or re–use instead of the current system were people are encouraged to drive across the city to a few eco–stations, which few people do, manufactures would have the incentive to change their production methods to a more eco efficient model, creating a greener digital economy and one that we can be proud to hand to our children.

The public consultation period ended on July 13 2010, at which time this website was closed to additional comments and submissions. News and updates on progress towards Canada’s first digital economy strategy will be posted in our Newsroom, and in other prominent locations on the site, as they become available.

Between May 10 and July 13, more than 2010 Canadian individuals and organizations registered to share their ideas and submissions. You can read their contributions — and the comments from other users — in the Submissions Area and the Idea Forum.
