In remote and rural parts of Canada, we are forever witnessing public dollars going to telecom corporations to "solve the problem" of delivery of broadband infrastructure. Too often, particular technologies and infrastructure are put in place (often subsidized at 100% of the cost) but then these corporate "business cases" become unsustainable to operate and the service is discontinued leaving the communities and regional unserved yet again. As well, these corporate "solutions" too often are paid for with public dollars and then charge local residents and businesses for their ongoing operational costs, further removing financial and capacity resources from the communities and regions. Building and investing in local capacity that supports the development and operation of local networks supports both local economic and employment opportunities that supports sustainable local networks and infrastructure. The dollars need to stay in the community and region, as much as possible.
