Objective(s): The Strategic Aerospace and Defence Initiative has three main objectives:
  1. to encourage strategic research and development that will result in innovation and excellence in new products and services;
  2. to enhance the competitiveness of Canadian aerospace and defence companies;
  3. to foster collaboration between research institutes, universities, colleges and the private sector.

Eligibility: Eligible participants include all Canadian companies in aerospace and defence industries that wish to conduct strategic research and development activities. Eligible activities include:
  • Industrial research
  • Pre-competitive development


Eligible costs may include:
  • labour;
  • material;
  • overhead;
  • specialized equipment; and
  • other costs related to the project.
Value: Project contributions are repayable contributions for strategic R&D projects and will equal approximately 30 percent of the project's total eligible costs. The contribution amount for each project is calculated on the basis of it being the minimum amount of assistance required to ensure that the project proceeds successfully and generates benefits for Canadians.
