The feature article in the May issue highlights recent work on financing of small and medium-sized (SME) exporters by the Small Business Branch of Industry Canada. The results of this study show that commercial lenders reject applications for operating loans from early-stage SME exporters at a rate of four times that of established firms. The study also found that among those SMEs that export, start-ups are just as likely as more established firms to be intensive exporters (those that derive more than 25% of sales from exports).
