The feature article of the May issue highlights some of the findings from a recent survey that quantifies the extent of the paperwork burden on the competitiveness of small and medium-sized businesses in Canada. The survey found that on average a business made 25 submissions to the government in 2008. Since 2005, the average number of submissions per business has decreased by 11 percent. Also included in this issue are articles on the latest data from the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy, which compares insolvency rates in Canada between 2007 and 2009; job creation, which indicates the distribution of payroll employment by firm size and industry; and self-employment by industry.
