Minister Clement Welcomes News of General Motors of Canada's Investment in St. Catharines
OTTAWA, April 27, 2010 — Today, the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, issued the following statement welcoming the news of a $235-million investment by General Motors of Canada Limited (GMCL) in St. Catharines, Ontario:
“This is great news for the automotive industry and for St. Catharines. This latest investment means 400 jobs will be maintained at GMCL’s powertrain facility to build GM’s next generation of fuel-efficient engines.
“Along with recent announcements of increased production in Oshawa and Ingersoll, Ontario, this news provides further confirmation that GMCL is moving in the right direction.
“This commitment by GMCL to continue investing in its Canadian operations is yet more evidence that our government made the right decision last year to fight for Canada’s automotive industry and the almost half-a-million jobs that depend on it.”
Last year, in addition to the financial support provided to GMCL, the federal government took steps to support the auto industry as a whole, including investing in communities hardest hit by the recession, building on corporate income tax reductions for business and enabling further investments in productivity-enhancing machinery and equipment.
