Minister Clement Applauds Strong Canadian Showing at 2010 Farnborough International Airshow

Ottawa, Ontario, July 23, 2010 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, extended congratulations today to the many leading Canadian aerospace companies for their performance in the 2010 Farnborough International Airshow. Canadian aerospace firms announced more than $1.4 billion in new orders, which demonstrates that Canada continues to be among the leaders in the global aerospace industry and is widely considered a supplier of choice to the world.

"I want to congratulate the Canadian delegation for a strong presence at the show and for representing the talent and the capability of our aerospace industry," said Minister Clement. "They did a great job showcasing to the world that Canada is positioned to become a supplier of choice to the major aircraft platforms of the future."

While at the show, Minister Clement participated in the following announcements:

  • The Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec announced support to the Liebherr Group to invest in a plant in Laval, Quebec, which would produce landing gear for the Bombardier C Series aircraft. Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions has announced a repayable contribution of $650 000.
  • BAE Systems announced a $500 million contract to Avcorp, based in Delta, British Columbia, to build the F-35 Carrier Variant Outboard Wing for the Joint Strike Fighter aircraft.

Canada is home to a wide range of expertise in aerospace. Canadian firms are considered among global leaders in the development and design of regional aircraft, flight simulators and training, small gas turbine engines, helicopters, landing gear systems and environmental control systems.

The 2010 Farnborough International Airshow is being held in Farnborough, United Kingdom, from July 19 to 25, 2010. It is a flagship event for the aerospace and aviation industries and is attended by companies from around the world.
