Minister Clement Tours Centre for the Built Environment at Nova Scotia Community College in Dartmouth

Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, February 4, 2011 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, was at Nova Scotia Community College's Waterfront campus in Dartmouth today to tour the Centre for the Built Environment, which was recently completed thanks to a federal investment.

The project received a Government of Canada investment of $860,450 through the Knowledge Infrastructure Program. The Nova Scotia government matched the project financing.

"Our government's investments in research and training facilities at campuses across the country have created jobs and helped our economy recover quickly and improve the quality of life for Canadians," said Minister Clement. "This investment will help Nova Scotia Community College emerge as a leader in teaching sustainable building practices."

The federal and provincial investments allowed the college to use cutting-edge green building features, such as biowalls, solar panels and geothermal heating, in creating the Centre for the Built Environment facilities, which conform to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.

As part of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada introduced the Knowledge Infrastructure Program, a $2-billion economic stimulus measure to maintain and improve research and training facilities at Canadian universities, colleges and CEGEPs. The program is providing economic stimulus, creating jobs, and generating the advanced technological infrastructure needed to keep Canadian institutions at the forefront of scientific advancement and ensure economic growth in the future.
