Dr. Sam Shaw Appointed Vice-Chair of the Standards Council of Canada Governing Council

Ottawa, February 9, 2011—The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), today announced the appointment of Dr. W.A. Sam Shaw as Vice-Chair of the SCC Governing Council.

"Dr. Shaw will be a valuable addition to the internationally renowned Standards Council of Canada," said Minister Clement. "His years of experience in the business, policy and regulatory fields will prove most useful in advancing the Council's work."

Dr. Shaw holds a BA from Honolulu's Chaminade University, an MSc from Dalhousie University, and an MEd and PhD from the University of Toronto. He also completed the Professional Development program at Harvard University's Institute for Educational Management and earned a Chartered Director designation in 2006 from The Directors College, a joint venture of McMaster University and the Conference Board of Canada. Dr. Shaw teaches at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and is an adjunct professor at Cape Breton University.

In 2010, Dr. Shaw accepted a position with Encana Corporation in Calgary, Alberta, as Vice-President, Natural Gas Policy Development. Before this post, Dr. Shaw had been President and CEO of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology since October 1997.

Dr. Shaw is a past recipient of Alberta Venture's Business Person of the Year award and has twice been recognized as one of Alberta's 50 Most Influential People. He has also served as a member on several boards and committees, including past Chair of the International Organization for Standardization's technical committee on learning services for non-formal education and training (ISO TC 232).

The SCC is a Crown corporation and part of the Industry Portfolio. Its mandate is to promote the efficient and effective use of standardization. The SCC is located in Ottawa and has a 15-member Governing Council and over 80 staff. The SCC coordinates Canada's network of standardization experts and offers a range of standardization-related programs and services that aim to enhance Canada's economic competitiveness and social well-being.
