Minister Paradis Emphasizes Canadian Advantages at North American International Auto Show
Detroit, Michigan, January 10, 2012—The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry, today attended the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. He toured the show floor and met with key auto manufacturing executives, underscoring a number of measures that make Canada an excellent location for automotive investment.
"I am pleased to say that major car companies continue to invest in Canada," said Minister Paradis. "To increase the competitiveness of our domestic auto industry, our government has lowered corporate taxes, improved capital cost allowances, reduced unnecessary regulation and red tape, supported the creation of a skilled and flexible workforce, and expanded access to markets abroad."
Automotive is the largest manufacturing sector in Canada, representing 12 percent of the country's manufacturing output and 20 percent of manufactured exports. Assembly plants and parts companies have driven growth and prosperity across Canada, and they contribute to the development of related manufacturing throughout the country.
"Economic growth and job creation continue to be a top priority for our government," added Minister Paradis. "In this respect, Canada's auto industry has weathered the current global financial crisis relatively well. It produces high-quality vehicles that consumers demand and continues to be a vital part of the Canadian economy."
Five major manufacturers currently assemble vehicles in Canada: General Motors Company, Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Company, Toyota Motor Corporation and Honda Motor Company.
