Total Project Cost:
$33,635,000
Total KIP Funding:
$16,817,500

Status of Project: Substantially completed

Project Description

This project involves retrofitting and renovating the Alexander building to provide contiguous space for faculty and graduate students in Land Resource Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Design and Rural Development, and Environmental Sciences. The four levels of the building are transformed into modern classrooms, offices and laboratories.

Primary Areas of Benefit

  1. Expands or enhances utility of research and development space: The newly renovated facility accommodates research space for 50 faculty researchers in Land Resource Sciences, 12 faculty researchers in the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development, and a small related engineering group. These groups create a cluster of environmental sciences expertise fostering collaboration and synergy among students and faculty. The new environmental cluster enhances Guelph’s leadership in environmental research. The renewed facility creates crucial links among faculty and graduate students in Land Resource Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Engineering.
  2. Improves energy efficiency: The renovations are estimated to reduce energy consumption by 15–20 percent.
  3. Upgrades health and safety aspects of facilities: The renovations and renewal allow faculty and staff to relocate to a better facility, removing them from a deteriorating and unsafe environment.
