Project Description

This project involves construction of the Balsillie Centre of Excellence at the University of Waterloo. The new centre consists of two buildings, totalling 100,000 square metres, housing the Balsillie School of International Affairs, Balsillie Master of Law Program and Balsillie School of Global Trade and Innovation. The new facilities are equipped with information infrastructure such as a digital library, a media centre and other cyber information technologies.

Primary Areas of Benefit

  1. Expands or enhances utility of training space: The new centre creates space for three new distinct schools and programs at the University of Waterloo: Balsillie School of International Affairs, Balsillie Master of Law Program, and Balsillie School of Global Trade and Innovation.

The Balsillie School of International Affairs is a collaborative initiative between the University of Waterloo and Wilfred Laurier University, with the support and involvement of the Centre for International Governance Innovation. This school has three programs: Post-Doctoral in Global Governance, Master of Arts in Global Governance and Master’s in International Public Policy. The PhD program in Global Governance has five key themes: global political economy, global environment, conflict and security, global justice and human rights, and multilateral institutions and diplomacy. The Master of Arts in Global Governance focuses on global political economy, global environment, peace and security, global justice and human rights, and multilateral institutions and diplomacy. The Master’s in International Public Policy includes four key themes: international environmental policy, international economic relations, human security and global governance.

The Balsillie Master of Law Program is an extension of the Ontario-based law program that attracts scholars and members of the legal profession, business community and government. The program is drawn from the regular law school curriculum with a focus on topics and research work such as international trade and investment, governance and international finance.

The Balsillie School of Global Trade and Innovation provides opportunities for a better understanding of and specialized knowledge and skills in international trade, investments and global innovation, and practices across international boarders.

  2. Expands or enhances utility of research and development space: Each of the three programs includes research components.
