Project Description
This project involves renovating 59,400 square feet of outdated science labs and adding almost 24,000 square feet of new information technology (IT) labs and business research spaces. The project also involves health and safety work such as the removal of asbestos, the installation of two fire hydrant and sprinkler system. Further work includes the installation of geothermal wells and heat pumps, 350 LED pot lights, and occupancy and daylight sensors on lighting systems. The project is designed to meet the requirements for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, Gold certification.
Primary Areas of Benefit
- Expands or enhances utility of research and development space: Expansion enhances the capacity of research and development in business and information technology. Laboratory space for 9 researchers was created. The facility supports key strategic goals of the university, including increasing support for faculty research.
- Expands or enhances utility of training space: The expansion enhances the capacity to train students with 7 classrooms that can accommodate up to 727 students and one training facility that can accommodate up to 150 students. The pedagogical model of business case study approach requires flexible spaces in forms of breakout and meeting rooms to enhance interactive collaborations.
- Improves energy efficiency: The design of the project in compliance with gold LEED certification requirements as well as the various environmental features of the project ensures that an estimated saving of 1,068,508 KWH in electricity consumption and 76,034 cubic metres of gas a year, which translates into 897.1 tones of CO2 fewer emissions per year.
