Total Project Cost:
$59,303,741
Total KIP Funding:
$18,042,184
Status of Project: Substantially completed
Project Description
This project involves construction of a three-storey 150,000 square foot Science Complex. The facility consists of a 7,250 square foot vivarium / animal holding and research complex, office space, classrooms, meeting rooms, and approximately 41 labs comprised of 23 teaching labs and 18 research labs located in various areas of biology, environmental studies and chemistry. The facility is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification.
Primary Areas of Benefit
- Expands or enhances utility of training space: The facility advances Canada’s scientific efforts while increasing capacity to train approximately 3,000 students. It houses new niche graduate programs, including a Master of Bioscience Technology and Public Policy.
- Improves energy efficiency: The facility is constructed with the latest environmental materials/technologies and is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification. The new energy-efficient labs are estimated to use 55 percent of the energy required by traditional labs. The facility has a state-of-the-art heat recovery wheel for moisture and heat recovery, along with a sensor system to set airflows at fume hoods according to use patterns.
- Develops incubation facilities for industry and research: The complex includes a Centre for Innovation and Commercialization, which will be used in partnership with CISCO Systems, a world leader in information technology.
