Total KIP Funding:
$1,721,550

Status of Project: Substantially completed

Project Description

This project involves construction of a 7,200 square foot addition to the Parkland campus and renovation of 4,600 square feet of existing space. The addition and renovated space accommodate a new electrical trades shop, an expanded Early Childhood Education program with an Early Learning Centre, classrooms and new labs, including a nursing arts lab. Further work includes the use of a geothermal heating and cooling system and, upgrades to the fire alarm system and moving the fire hose hydrants to a more strategic location. The addition is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification.

Primary Areas of Benefit

  1. Expands or enhances utility of training space: This project expands the capacity to deliver apprenticeship and advanced skilled trades. New programs include a permanent Carpentry program and Rotating Electrical, Plumbing/Pipefitting, Welding / Industrial Metals Fabrication, Automotive / Small Motive Systems, Power Engineering and Nursing programs. The renovated facility provides capacity to train an additional 30 apprentices annually. In addition, the facility includes a new “nursing arts lab,” which provides space for all health program training and a regular rotation of the Practical Nursing program delivered at the Parkland campus. The new lab supports a post-graduate training program for nurses in the Parkland region, ensuring that all nurses are appropriately trained in all required skills.
  2. Improves energy efficiency: The facility is constructed with the latest environmental materials/technologies and is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification as well as the use of geothermal heating and cooling system reduces energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
  3. Upgrades the health and safety aspects of facilities: Upgrades to the fire alarm and a more strategic location of the fire hydrant improve the health and safety aspects of facilities.
