Status of Project: Substantially completed

Project Description

This project involves construction of a 77,363 square foot Biosciences and Technology Convergence Centre. The centre includes two wet labs, two dry labs, offices, classrooms, clinical examination rooms and meeting rooms. The facility is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.

Primary Areas of Benefit

  1. Expands or enhances utility of research and development space: The new facility is designed to support research consortia of academics, government and private sector / industry partners in joint initiatives in bio-economy, environmental and bio-products industries. The centre’s 2,000 square feet of wet and dry labs enhance research opportunities for students and faculty in Chemical Ecology, Plant Biology and Fisheries Biology. Additional lab space is used for research in molecular cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry, environmental biology and health informatics.
  2. Expands or enhances utility of training space: New teaching laboratories in the centre increase the functionality and use of current space to accommodate an additional 220 undergraduate students.
  3. Improves energy efficiency: The Biosciences and Technology Convergence Centre is designed and built to meet LEED Gold certification. Energy efficiencies are optimized to meet the Green Architecture 2030 Challenge, with a 2010 target of 60 percent reduction in fossil fuel consumption.
