Project: Interactive Distance Education and Alternative Power Generation Infrastructure
Total Project Cost:
$1,114,000
Total KIP Funding:
$557,000
Status of Project: Substantially completed
Project Description
This project involves renovating a facility to accommodate an interactive distance education program and constructing an alternative energy (biomass) heating generation facility. The new facility for distance education includes renovating classrooms, upgrading space to create a lecture theatre for 150 people and a seminar room for 12 people to provide interactive distance education capabilities. The biomass power generation facility provides approximately 70% of the institution's requirements for heating using a 1.25 MW system producing approximately 2,000 MWh of heat per year.
Primary Areas of Benefit
- Expands or enhances utility of training space: The new Interactive Distance Education capabilities increase access to education and research partners both at the Otteburne campus and the Calgary campus.
- Improves energy efficiency: The biomass power component of the project reduces natural gas consumption by approximately 70%-80% and provides the opportunity for the College to sell back surplus generation power to Manitoba Hydro.
