Alternative Fuel Vehicle Technology

The automotive sector has interests in the research and development of alternative fuel vehicle technologies in response to the long term decline in world fossil fuels. Moreover, there is the necessity for environmentally clean technologies to comply with emissions regulations. Alternative fuels generally refer to propane, natural gas, methanol, ethanol, hydrogen, and electric power sources. Each fuel has its own properties and support infrastructure requirements. The design of alt fuel vehicles includes dedicated fuel or flexible fuel units. Canadian capabilities in alt fuel vehicle technologies cover a broad range of vehicles and components that are highlighted here:

Industry Contacts

Quebec Industrial Research Centre
A research organization interested in alternative fuel vehicle development including electric vehicles.

The Canadian Natural Gas Vehicle Alliance
is an association of companies involved in the natural gas industry including natural gas utilities, NGV component and parts industries, governments, consultants and R & D firms. The purpose of the Alliance is to bring all NGV expertise together to consolidate effort and to promote the development and sustainability of the natural gas vehicle market in Canada.

Canadian Oxygenated Fuels Association
The Canadian Oxygenated Fuels Association is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the development and promotion of transportation fuels which reduce air pollution. Our focus is on fuels which increase their oxygen content by the addition of alcohols or their ether derivatives. This allows more complete combustion of the fuel, and thus reduces a number of important toxic emissions.

Canadian Energy Research Institute
The mission of the Institute is to undertake independent, high quality economic research on energy and related environmental issues and policies in order to assist Canadian business and government organizations. You can contact Canadian Energy Research Institute's (CERI) EV expert, Michelle Heath.

Ford Motor Company of Canada
Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited's commitment to environmental leadership is exemplified by its offering of a broad range of "alternative fuel" vehicles. Natural gas, propane, methanol, ethanol, and electricity power Ford vehicles and offer the potential for reduced tailpipe emissions and increased energy security.

Propane Gas Association of Canada Inc.
Propane is a premium fuel. The mission of our industry is to prosper by maximising the economic and environmental benefits of propane to Canadians. The mission of our association is to provide services that assist Canada's Propane Industry to achieve its full market potential.
