Community Access Program (CAP)

How to Apply

All existing CAP sites are eligible to apply for CAP YI funding. All applications for the CAP Youth Initiative must be sent to the Delivery Organization in each province or territory.

CAP sites applying for youth funding must demonstrate that they can meet both the Criteria for Youth Interns and Criteria for CAP sites (below) in order to be successful. The application must be complete and must contain current information.

Adjudication committees from each province or territory will use the criteria below as a checklist when reviewing applications for funding from CAP sites.

Criteria for CAP sites

CAP sites must

  • be open to the public at least 20 hours per week;
  • demonstrate the capacity to directly supervise youth intern;
  • show a need for ICT skills at the CAP site or network cluster;
  • must demonstrate sufficient administrative support and provide adequate workspace and equipment to the youth intern;
  • provide youth intern with meaningful work related to ICT;
  • provide an appropriate job description for the youth intern that reflects the CAP site and community needs; and
  • ensure that the youth intern has email access since most communication from the Provincial Coordinator is through the Internet.

Criteria for Youth Interns

Youth must

  • be between the ages of 15 to 30;
  • be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a person who has refugee status;
  • be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations;
  • not be in receipt of Employment Insurance benefits during their internship;
  • be a student intending to return to school full-time after the internship if hired under the Summer Work Experience; and
  • be a high school graduate with some post-secondary education if hired under the Career Focus stream.

Priority will be given to

  • youth facing employment barriers: Aboriginal people, members of a visible minority group, persons with disabilities, and women.
  • first-time applicants to the CAP Youth Initiative.

Not eligible are persons who are family members of a CAP site employee.
