Computers for Schools – Northwest Territories

Computers for Schools Northwest Territories (CFS-NWT) is a non-profit organization administered by the Smart Communities Society, registered by the Government of the Northwest Territories under the Societies Act. CFS-NWT provides computers each year to schools, libraries, community access sites, and non-profit organizations in the north. CFS-NWT also trains schools and college students through the Technical Work Experience Program (TWEP) which employs youth, under age 30, to work at the refurbishing centre and gain experience and knowledge of computers and computer equipment. The organization also designs and delivers workshops to the Aboriginal/ First Nations people and communities. Since there is no e-waste facility available in Yellowknife, this program also avoids significant amounts of electronic waste going to the city dump and is regarded as a "best practice" program for keeping material, which is often potentially toxic, out of landfill sites. In 2008 we received a certificate of appreciation from the City of Yellowknife for our outstanding efforts in recycling.
