CIPO will no longer place a paper copy of outgoing correspondence in "all paper files" with respect to patent documents.

Since the deployment of the TechSource LOB system on June 5, 1997, CIPO has retained a temporary paper file with respect to patent documents fully captured on TechSource, including incoming and outgoing correspondence, starting with patent application number 2,198,508. A great number of patent documents, before this number, are treated in the same manner; for example patent applications where the request for examination was made after deployment of TechSource LOB.

The public and patent professionals are advised that CIPO has never considered this temporary paper file as the complete official patent document file.

After June 5, 1999, CIPO will no longer place a paper copy of outgoing correspondence with this temporary paper file. This includes all notices, certificates, reports and office letters.

A copy of the outgoing correspondence will be kept, as shown in the following table:

After June 5, 1999, the TechSource system must be consulted to obtain a complete record of patent documents fully captured on TechSource. Further, the TechSource system must be consulted for a record of host-generated correspondence created after June 5, 1999, for patent documents not fully captured on TechSource.
