The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and its Member States decided in 2000 to designate an annual World Intellectual Property Day. They chose April 26, the date on which the Convention establishing WIPO originally entered into force in 1970.
The aims of World Intellectual Property Day are:
- To raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life;
- To increase understanding of how protecting intellectual property (IP) rights helps promote creativity and innovation;
- To celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe; and
- To encourage respect for the IP rights of others.
The annual celebration, linking IP and creativity, provides us with the opportunity to celebrate and promote innovation and economic growth. The theme of World Intellectual Property Day this year is "Designing the Future".
During the entire month of April, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) will raise IP awareness within the post-secondary education sector and among small and medium enterprises communities. CIPO's Outreach team will offer IP presentations and encourage Canadian IP stakeholders to emphasize the importance of IP.
CIPO supports the growth and prosperity of Canadians and proudly salutes the creative potential of Canadian entrepreneurs and innovators.
