Making submissions to the Patent Office
You can electronically submit the following:
- fee payments
- requests for national entry of an international application
- other correspondence relating to applications and patents, with attached documents, if applicable, in accordance with the Patent Act and Patent Rules
- documents or correspondence relating thereto, in accordance with the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) and Regulations under the PCT
- sequence listings
Once you complete the general correspondence form (below), we will automatically create a letter for you addressed to the Commissioner of Patents.

Documents must be provided in either TIFF or PDF format, with the exception of biological sequence listings, which can be provided only in ASCII format. Biological sequence listings submitted under the Canadian Patent Rules in force prior to , however, must also be provided in either TIFF or PDF format.
CIPO will send all further national correspondence according to your preference (email or regular mail). Since email is currently not secure, when your correspondence relates to applications for patents that are not yet open to public inspection, you may wish to indicate that future correspondence be sent by regular mail. This provides better security of your information. Please advise us if you change your email address so that all future correspondence can reach the proper destination. PCT outgoing correspondence will continue to be sent by mail.

System and browser requirements

Registering with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada
Before you access any secure electronic services, you must first log on to the Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada secure server. If you do not already have an Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada account, you will need to create one.

Reinstatement of an application and putting a patent back into good standing
To reinstate your Application you must pay the following fees:
- Reinstatement Fee
- Late Fee, if applicable
- The Fee you are trying to reinstate, if applicable
For example if you are trying to reinstate an application that has gone abandoned due to a missed Maintenance Fee then you will need to do the following in the General Correspondence form:
- Attach a document explaining why you were not able to pay the maintenance fee on time. You may complete this on the Attachment step of the General Correspondence form.
- Select Reinstatement of abandoned application from fee section Part I - Applications
- Select Late payment fee from fee section Part IV - General
- Select the appropriate maintenance fee from Part VI - Maintenance Fee
