Objective(s): The Canada Foundation for Innovation is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure.

The Foundation's mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and other non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians.

Eligibility: An eligible institution is defined as:
  • a university, hospital, or post-secondary college or educational institution that is situated in Canada and has demonstrated its capability to support and conduct research;
  • a not-for-profit organization or a trust, as long as it is not an agency of governments or for-profit corporations. Its activities are primarily carried out in Canada, and it has demonstrated its capability to support and conduct research.


Eligible Canadian institutions can apply for Canada Foundation for Innovation support.
Value:
  • The total program budget is $3.65 billion.
  • The Foundation normally funds up to 40 percent of a project's infrastructure costs which are invested in partnership with eligible institutions and their funding partners from the public, private, and voluntary sectors who provide the remainder.
  • Based on this formula, the total capital investment by the Foundation, the research institutions, and their partners, will exceed $11 billion by 2010.
Application Process: Applications are assessed using the following criteria:
  • quality of research and need for
  • infrastructure;
  • contribution to strengthening the capacity for innovation; and
  • potential benefits of the research to Canada.
