Subject: saying no to any aw similar to the DMCA
As a comercial software writer I am sometimes dismayed by what goes on in the world of software. People steal your work, they crack it, they decompile it and many other things.
Recently I was notified by a person that one of the programs I produce called Inetserv (an email server) was succeptable to an "exploit". If a user sent bad information to the program it would crash instantly. This problem was caused by me making an error in the code while programming.
If they had not alerted me to this information my software could be causing computers to become unstable and possibly lead to theft of personal information. If a law which mimicked the US DMCA were to be in effect in Canada this would be illegal. I for one was happy when I was notified I had made a grave error that could potentially cause massive problems. An error like this would not and did not get noticed during regular beta testing.
I would like to say NO to any law that is in any way similar to the DMCA which would restrict the ability of programmers and users to determine if products were safe and worked properly.
I urge you to remove these controversial and anti-freedom provisions from the CPDCI language. The DMCA is already an international debacle. Its flaws should not be imported and forced on Canadians
Thank You
