Subject: Canada's Digital Copyright Act
Dear Sir or Madam:It has generally been my experience that our friends north of the border show more sense than we in the United States. It is therefore with some distress that I learn you are contemplating imitating one of our grosser mistakes by criminalizing the copyright law. The ridiculous results that this has led to in our country -- from the prosecution of foreign programmers for acts legal in their own country to corporate suppression of scientific research -- should not encourage Canada to follow our bad example. I hope that the United States will soon repeal the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, one of the worst pieces of legislation our country has passed. In the interim, I hope that wiser counsels will prevail in Canada and you will not impose similar legislation on your country.
Very truly yours,
Charles Williamson Day, Jr.
