Subject: Canadian copyright reform

Hi,

I am a programmer for a respected R&D company in Calgary, AB. I also contribute to Open Source projects. I am writing with regards to plans to adopt a law similar to the US's DMCA. I am sure it is unsurprising to know that I am writing against the idea. (The fact that it is unsurprising shows how it's obvious how a majority of the population ... the consumers ... would feel about this).

The US's DMCA stifles innovation and technological growth. At a time when we need programmers to be creative is no time to scare them away. Already, I have heard of people moving to Europe or Asia for programming jobs for fear of writing software in the US. Asians do NOT suffer the stifling stipulations of the DMCA allowing them to grow, leapfrogging the US in a lot of technological fronta (hardware and software).

If Canada wants to join this growth spurt and not follow the US into it's economic/technology slump, I most strongly urge us to stay away from creating laws which are obviously funded by a select few companies ... companies which are rich enough as it is and have no contributions whatsoever to make in this country's growth.

Yours truly,

Richard Plana
