Subject: Canadian Copyright Reform

To Industry Canada, the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Intellectual Property Policy Directorate and other concerned agencies:

I am writing to express my concerns about the proposed changes with regards to intellectual property in the Consultation Paper on Digital Copyright Issues (CPCDI).

While the measures do not seem as drastic as those of the DMCA in the United States, I am still concerned over the rights of individuals to use protected materials for personal use. It would be disheartening to find legislation eventually pass that would make it illegal to bypass protective measures for copyright material and have the content controlled by a narrow group of companies or people for an excessive period of time. I agree that those who produce works and wish to not have them distributed without royalties should be allowed to do so. However, I would want said material to be easily accessed by the individual who purchased it without the hassle of going through the content provider.

I urge you to take great care in protecting the rights and freedoms of individuals when you consider these changes to our intellectual property laws.

Sincerely,

Geoffrey Wozniak
Sessional Lecturer
